The building’s undulating roof is explained by 3XN as “an integral element of the fish market’s iconic design” as properly as getting important to its general sustainability method. Shaped to reply to the spatial calls for of the industry underneath, the roof is developed to harvest rainwater for reuse, secure retail spaces from the sunshine, and filter daylight by openings on the rooftop.

The form of the roof was informed by the site’s prevailing winds, making it possible for the extraction of hot air whilst preserving users from southerly winds. Built from timber and aluminum, the roof is also made to be as permeable as achievable, reducing the need for air conditioning when also deflecting direct daylight.

“The roof is a single of the building’s most significant sustainability capabilities delivering daylighting, shading, and purely natural air flow. The geometry also allows it to develop its own electricity by incorporating photovoltaic cells, rainwater selection, and recycling.”
